2 Minors Charged After Attempted Car Theft: Des Plaines Police Blotter

DES PLAINES, IL — Two minors were charged with conspiracy to commit motor vehicle theft after officers investigating an attempted car theft spotted three people running from the area, according to the Des Plaines Police Department's latest crime report.

Other reports included vehicles rummaged through overnight on Ottawa and Bellaire streets, two drills stolen from a hardware store and an order of protection violation.

The following information comes from Des Plaines Police Department reports. An arrest does not constitute a finding of guilt. Those charged are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

ATTEMPTED MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT

A woman reported at 2:45 a.m. Oct. 3, that someone attempted to steal her Kia from a parking lot in the 700 block of Northwest Highway. She discovered a broken window when she returned to the vehicle. Investigators also found damage to the ignition. The vehicle was not stolen.

While investigating, officers spotted three people running from the area, established a perimeter and eventually took all three into custody. The related report lists the 70 block of Nicholas as the location at 4:30 a.m.

Investigators determined one person had limited involvement and the other two were minors. The minors were charged with conspiracy to commit motor vehicle theft and released to an adult in accordance with Illinois law.

THEFTS FROM MOTOR VEHICLES

Residents reported vehicles rummaged through overnight at the following locations Oct. 5:

  • 2200 block of Ottawa Street, reported at 3:45 a.m.
  • 400 block of Bellaire Street, reported at 3:40 a.m.
  • 2000 block of Ottawa Street, reported at 3:40 a.m.

Officers found no signs of forced entry. According to the reports, surveillance footage showed four people getting out of a car and attempting to enter or entering multiple vehicles on the streets. The reports did not identify any missing property.

THEFT

A woman reported at 10:50 p.m. Oct. 2, that her iPhone disappeared after she left it on a hotel’s front desk counter in the 1200 block of Lee Street. She had gone to her room before realizing she left the phone behind. Officers spoke with other patrons, and the investigation remained ongoing.

A man stole two impact drills from a hardware store in the 1100 block of Lee Street at 12:24 p.m. Oct. 4, according to the report. He left without paying and entered a vehicle driven by a woman before leaving the area.

VIOLATION OF AN ORDER OF PROTECTION

Peter Murgueitio, 27, of Chicago, was arrested following an incident reported at 8:42 a.m. Oct. 2, in the 100 block of South River Road.

A woman told officers she had an order of protection prohibiting Murgueitio from contacting her. She reported finding him waiting in a clinic parking lot, feeling intimidated and running inside before calling police.

Officers confirmed his identity and the order of protection. Murgueitio acknowledged attempting to speak with the woman and arriving with the expectation of seeing her, according to authorities. He was taken into custody and processed.
