21-Year-Old Dies After Officer-Involved Shooting In Des Plaines

DES PLAINES, IL — A 21-year-old Des Plaines man died after an officer-involved shooting Wednesday afternoon during a police response to a domestic disturbance on Touhy Avenue, authorities said.

Des Plaines police identified the man as Ayham Babidi, 21, of the 2000 block of East Touhy Avenue. Police said Babidi was pronounced dead shortly after the incident at an area hospital.

Officers responded at about 2:32 p.m. Wednesday, to a report of a domestic disturbance in the 2000 block of Touhy Avenue.

"During the response, an officer-involved shooting occurred involving a male resident of the home," police said in a news release.

The Des Plaines Fire Department provided medical aid and transported Babidi to a local hospital, where he later died.

Police had initially provided few details about the incident. A stretch of Touhy Avenue between Des Plaines River Road and Scott Street was closed Wednesday afternoon as officers investigated, and police said at the time there was no threat to the public.

According to CBS Chicago, a neighbor reported hearing screaming from inside the home after police arrived and began putting up crime scene tape.

The Major Case Assistance Team is investigating the shooting and will conduct what Des Plaines police described as an "impartial, third-party review."

Police said no additional information was available as of Wednesday night and that more details would be released as they become available.
