3 Dogs, Cat Killed In Des Plaines House Fire

DES PLAINES, IL — Three dogs and a cat were killed in an early-morning house fire Sunday in Des Plaines, while one resident escaped and declined further medical treatment.

Firefighters were called at about 3:32 a.m. to a home in the 100 block of East Walnut Avenue.

Crews arrived to find fire coming from windows and the roof at the rear of the one-story single-family home.

Firefighters initially attacked the blaze from outside before entering the home, according to the Daily Herald.

The fire was brought under control by about 3:48 a.m.

The resident who was home at the time escaped and called 911. Paramedics evaluated the resident, who declined further treatment.

4 Pets Killed

Three dogs and one cat died in the fire.

No firefighter injuries were reported.

Preliminary damage was estimated at about $75,000, according to the Daily Herald.

Mutual-Aid Crews Respond

The fire also drew assistance from neighboring departments.

The Niles Fire Department said Truck 2 and Ambulance 2 responded at about 3:30 a.m. to assist with the residential structure fire.

The North Maine Fire Protection District said Battalion 1, Engine 1 and Ambulance 1 also responded to the confirmed fire and worked alongside Des Plaines crews and other mutual-aid departments.

Des Plaines police and fire investigators are working to determine the fire's cause and origin.
