DES PLAINES, IL — A 37-year-old Berwyn man has been charged in connection with a crash that killed one Illinois Tollway worker and injured two others while they were repairing potholes on I-294, according to Illinois State Police.
Paul R. Ong was arrested following the May 30 crash on southbound I-294 north of Devon Avenue in Des Plaines.
The worker killed in the crash was previously identified as Calvin Holley, 52, of Chicago, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Troopers responded to the crash at around 4:26 a.m. Three Illinois Tollway workers were in the roadway making pothole repairs when an SUV driven by Ong struck one of the workers, state police said.
Troopers rendered medical aid to the injured worker before he was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The two other workers were also taken to an area hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Ong was taken into custody at the scene.
After an investigation, Illinois State Police presented the case Monday to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, which approved one count of aggravated driving under the influence involving death, a Class 2 felony.
Ong remains in custody pending his first court appearance.
The charge represents an accusation by the state and is often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Ong is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
