DES PLAINES, IL — Middle school soccer is coming to Community Consolidated School District 62 through a new partnership with two neighboring school districts.
District 62 announced Thursday that it has joined Community Consolidated School District 59 and Park Ridge-Niles School District 64 to introduce seventh- and eighth-grade boys and girls interscholastic soccer to the Mid Central Suburban League.
The program will feature separate seasons, with boys soccer played in the fall and girls soccer in the spring.
Each team will play every conference school once during a seven-game season. A typical week will include one game and two after-school practices.
"This is very exciting news for our district's athletes, their caregivers and the community," District 62 Superintendent Michael Amadei said in a statement.
Amadei credited Districts 59 and 64 with helping bring the program together and said he looks forward to seeing District 62 students compete this year.
District 62 Board of Education President Elizabeth Massa said the program required cooperation among several organizations.
"Our students deserve all the opportunities we can provide," Massa said.
The first games for District 62 schools are scheduled for Sept. 8.
Chippewa Middle School will host a home game, while Iroquois Community School and Algonquin Middle School will open on the road.
District 62 Athletic Coordinator Mark Moser said the program will give students a chance to represent the district, strengthen their soccer skills and compete as part of a team.
