DES PLAINES, IL — A Des Plaines man was charged with aggravated DUI after police said they found an overturned car in the roadway, while two Chicago men were arrested after officers said they switched seats following a hit-and-run crash.
Those arrests were among several included in the Des Plaines Police Department's latest crime report.
The following information comes from the Des Plaines Police Department. An arrest does not constitute a finding of guilt.
AGGRAVATED DUI
Wilfer Martinez Gamez, of the 400 block of North Third Avenue, Des Plaines, was arrested Sept. 26 following a crash in the 300 block of North Third Avenue.
Police said officers arrived to find a gray Honda sedan overturned in the middle of the roadway after it struck a trailer. Martinez Gamez told officers he had been the only person inside the vehicle.
Officers said Martinez Gamez had watery, bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol. He allegedly admitted drinking before driving and later told officers he was intoxicated.
Martinez Gamez was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said a records check showed he did not have a valid Illinois driver's license.
He was charged with felony aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, misdemeanor DUI and no valid driver's license. He was also cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.
DUI, HIT-AND-RUN
Isaiah Ramirez, of the 3500 block of West Columbus Avenue, Chicago, was arrested Sept. 28 following an investigation into a hit-and-run crash in the 1700 block of Sycamore Street.
Police said a white sedan struck a parked vehicle and left the scene. A witness recorded two men outside the vehicle after the crash.
Officers later spotted a white Nissan matching the description traveling on Wolf Road and said they saw the occupants switch seats after pulling over on Thacker Street.
Police identified the men as Ramirez and William L. Choc Maquin. Officers said both acknowledged recently driving the vehicle and initially gave conflicting accounts about who had been driving during the crash.
Ramirez later admitted he was driving when the crash occurred and that the two switched seats afterward, according to police.
Police said Ramirez showed signs of impairment and provided a breath sample above the legal limit.
He was charged with DUI, DUI with a blood-alcohol concentration over .08 and failure to remain at the scene of a vehicle-damage accident. He was also cited for no registration light and improper lane usage.
AGGRAVATED DUI
William L. Choc Maquin, of the 2400 block of South Avers Avenue, Chicago, was arrested in connection with the same incident.
Police said officers saw Choc Maquin driving the Nissan before he and Ramirez switched seats.
Choc Maquin allegedly showed signs of impairment and refused additional testing after being taken to the Des Plaines Police Station.
Police said a records check showed his Illinois driver's license was suspended.
He was charged with felony aggravated DUI, misdemeanor DUI and driving on a suspended license.
POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE
Elmer Lopez Cano, of the 500 block of South Milwaukee Avenue, Wheeling, was arrested Sept. 25 following a traffic stop in the 700 block of West Golf Road.
Police said an officer stopped a Chevrolet Impala after seeing it cross the center line near Elmhurst and Dulles roads.
While speaking with Lopez Cano, the officer saw an empty alcohol container behind the driver's seat and allegedly saw him place a small item into his wallet.
Police searched the vehicle and reported finding a small ripped bag containing a white powdery substance suspected to be cocaine.
The substance later tested positive for the probable presence of cocaine, according to police.
Lopez Cano was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance and cited for improper lane usage.
FLEEING POLICE, RECKLESS DRIVING
Adrian W. Pilny, of the 500 block of Cordial Drive, Des Plaines, was arrested Sept. 24 after police said he fled from an attempted traffic stop on an orange dirt bike.
Police said an officer first tried to stop the dirt bike on Seymour Avenue, but the rider sped away, ran a stop sign and entered a nearby subdivision.
The officer later spotted the dirt bike again near Beau Drive and Dempster Street. Police said the rider again failed to stop at a stop sign.
When the officer activated emergency lights a second time, the dirt bike slowed and the rider fell to the ground before being taken into custody.
Pilny was charged with fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer and reckless driving. He was also cited twice for disobeying a traffic-control device and for operating a non-highway vehicle on a street.
DOMESTIC BATTERY, ORDER OF PROTECTION VIOLATION
Edgar Garcia, of the 600 block of Dulles Road, Des Plaines, was arrested Sept. 24 following a reported domestic battery.
Police said Garcia struck a family member multiple times and officers observed injuries consistent with the victim's account.
A records check showed Garcia was also subject to an order of protection, police said.
He was charged with domestic battery and violation of an order of protection and was taken to a Cook County courthouse for a detention hearing.
OBSTRUCTING A PEACE OFFICER
Martin Garcia, of the 1600 block of Spruce Avenue, Des Plaines, was arrested Sept. 24 following a disturbance in the 700 block of Northwest Highway.
Police initially responded for a domestic disturbance and then received another call about two men fighting outside an apartment complex.
Officers said Garcia appeared intoxicated and refused repeated requests to provide identification or identifying information.
He was charged with obstructing a peace officer. Police said no additional charges were filed because the other person involved did not want to pursue a complaint.
DUI
Mohamed D. Yassin, of the 200 block of Ashbury Circle, Park Ridge, was arrested Sept. 27 after police responded to a stopped vehicle near Lunt Avenue and Mannheim Road.
Officers found Yassin seated behind the wheel of a black GMC SUV and said they detected a strong odor of alcohol.
Police said Yassin had watery, bloodshot eyes and showed signs of impairment during field sobriety testing.
Yassin was charged with DUI and cited for improper parking on the roadway.
DOMESTIC BATTERY
Rivital Arzamendi, of the 100 block of Dover Drive, Des Plaines, was arrested Sept. 27 after police responded to a report of a man and woman arguing near Des Plaines River Road and Algonquin Road.
Police said officers found a man who appeared to have been battered and learned Arzamendi had left in a black Honda sedan.
Officers later located the vehicle at a Dover Drive residence and took Arzamendi into custody.
She was charged with domestic battery and later taken to a Cook County courthouse for a detention hearing.
MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT
2200 block of Eastview Drive
A 67-year-old Des Plaines woman reported that her white Jeep Grand Cherokee was stolen from her driveway sometime overnight between Sept. 24 and Sept. 25.
Police said broken glass, believed to be from the passenger side of the vehicle, was found where the SUV had been parked.
The victim later reported the vehicle had traveled through the Devon Tollway Plaza after it was stolen.
MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT
2700 block of Craig Drive
A 45-year-old Des Plaines man reported Sept. 28 that his white Acura MDX had been stolen from his driveway.
Police said it was unclear how the vehicle was entered. It was last reported in the Lake Forest area.
RETAIL THEFT
800 block of South Elmhurst Road
A Jewel-Osco representative reported Sept. 25 that a man stole approximately $680 worth of playing cards.
Police said the man left through the store's south exit and his whereabouts were unknown.
HIT-AND-RUN
Des Plaines River Road and Stewart Avenue
A driver reported Sept. 24 that another vehicle struck the rear bumper of the victim's car while traffic was stopped near Stewart Avenue, pushing the vehicle into another car.
Police said the offending driver turned onto Van Buren Avenue, briefly got out of a black pickup truck and then drove away without providing information.
HIT-AND-RUN
2100 block of South Mannheim Road
A person riding a scooter on a sidewalk was struck Sept. 27 by a vehicle exiting a private driveway, police said.
The driver allegedly failed to yield and left in a gray SUV without providing information.
No injuries were reported.
HIT-AND-RUN
Oakton and Lee streets
A driver reported Sept. 28 that a gray Genesis SUV struck the rear of the victim's vehicle while it was stopped at a red light on Oakton Street.
Police said the SUV fled south on Lee Street without providing information.
