DES PLAINES, IL — A Des Plaines man accused of stealing two drill sets from a hardware store and a Maywood man accused of possessing a controlled substance were arrested Oct. 8, according to the Des Plaines Police Department's latest crime report.
The department listed no other noteworthy incidents in its Oct. 8–9 report.
Please remember that although a person may be charged with a crime, a charge is merely an accusation, and the person is innocent until proven guilty.
Brandon L. Kern, 35, of Des Plaines, was charged with one misdemeanor count of theft at 8:51 p.m. Oct. 8, after coming to the police station to discuss an investigation.
Officers responded Oct. 4 to Ace Hardware in the 1100 block of South Lee Street, where an employee reported that a man took two Milwaukee impact drill sets from a shelf and left without paying. The man drove away in a black Volkswagen sedan.
A witness provided the car's license plate number. Detectives determined the Volkswagen belonged to Kern and later identified him as the person who took the merchandise, according to the report.
Detectives contacted Kern by phone before he came to the station. He was arrested, cited and released with court information.
Latrell L. Jackson, 27, of Maywood, was charged with one felony count of possession of a controlled substance following a traffic stop at 10:20 p.m. Oct. 8, in the 3000 block of South Mannheim Road.
An officer near Mannheim and Higgins roads saw a southbound black Buick LaCrosse commit a traffic violation and noticed it had no front license plate. Jackson was a front-seat passenger.
During the stop, the officer smelled raw cannabis, and Jackson said he had cannabis in a backpack inside the vehicle, according to the report. Officers asked both occupants to get out and searched the car.
The search turned up open alcohol on the passenger-side floorboard, which Jackson acknowledged drinking before the stop. Officers also found a bag containing a substance they suspected was psilocybin mushrooms.
Jackson was taken to the police station, charged, cited and released with court information.
