Apprenticeships are arrangements between educators and employers that allows students to work in a field of interest while earning money as well as academic credit.
“Apprenticeships give students the ability to work for a company—typically for a five-year period—while completing their associate degree entirely paid for by their employer. Students not only get a wonderful education, they also receive invaluable practical experience and a guaranteed job at the completion of their degree,” Internship and Apprenticeship Coordinator Shannon McKenzie says.

Apprenticeship programs are being offered in Advanced Manufacturing/Mechatronics and International Logistics and Freight Forwarding through the Industry Consortium for Advanced Technical Training (ICATT). Prospective students must successfully apply to Oakton and meet placement requirements, and apply to ICATT, before they can be reviewed by potential companies. At the completion of the five-year program, successful apprentices can expect a starting salary of between $40-50,000, according to Glassdoor.com.
In addition to apprenticeships, Oakton also provides an Internship Program. This is a program for current students who have at least a 2.5 GPA and coursework in a field of study required by the internship. Opportunities are available in a variety of fields, including accounting, business, sales, marketing, information technology, manufacturing, graphic design, communications and politics/government. Most positions include compensation between $9-12 per hour and run approximately 16 weeks long and 10-20 hours a week.
