The Champion of Freedom Award went to Dr. Bishop Horace E. Smith, Spencer Leak Senior, and Larry Huggins.
On Friday, January 17, 2025, the Chicago HBCU Alumni choir launched off the city's yearly interfaith breakfast in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The event brings together public authorities and members of the community to celebrate King's legacy and impact on Chicago.

"He was up against a whole different beast when he arrived in Chicago. He had to contend with the democratic apparatus. He had to deal with segregation for decades. He had to deal with institutionalized prejudice for decades. Shermann "Dilla" Thomas, an urban historian, remarked, "He came here and dared to challenge all of that."

The theme for this year is "Building a Chicago of Hope and Opportunity."

To make sure that the fight won't be in vain over the coming years, we must continue to be clear-eyed and optimistic that the future vision will eventually bring the world's moral citizens together. Will Chicago's character surface along with that of America? "Chicago will continue to be a safe haven for progressives, and it will even be the route or an underground railroad," Mayor Brandon Johnson stated.
Brandon Johnson, the mayor of Chicago, mentioned the city's immigrant population and the possibility of mass deportations starting as soon as Trump takes office in his speech.

They want me to be angry with them as a Black man. "You must be insane if you believe that I will permit white supremacy to separate Black and brown people in the City of Chicago," the mayor declared.

The Champion of Freedom Award went to Dr. Bishop Horace E. Smith, Spencer Leak Senior, and Larry Huggins.

The men received recognition for upholding King's dream of equality and for their dedication to their communities.

"There are no words to describe how noble this is to me. According to Huggins, MLK was an instrument major for peace.
In an interview with Pakistani American statesman Mr. Tariq Siddiqui, he stated: "Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 's courage and compassion have inspired generations of people. Today, we stand to honor him and his contributions.
