City Council Denies Plans for Muslim Center
Representatives from the American Islamic Center vowed to file a lawsuit against the city after council members denied their plans to turn an office building into their religious center.

The Des Plaines City Council denied plans from a Bosnian Muslim group to open a religious center in town, the Daily Herald reports.
The American Islamic Center wanted to convert two office buildings at 1645 Birchwood Ave. into a center, that would have included a prayer hall and community center with classrooms, an eating area and a performing arts area.
The petition asked to change the general manufacturing zoning of the parcel to institutional zoning, which permits houses of worship. The building is presently vacant, but was previously home to an insurance company.
