Coffee Talk to explore World War II and Des Plaines

Coffee Talk, "Des Plaines Service Members of World War II," Thursday, March 12, from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the History Center, 781 Pearson St.

The Des Plaines History Center will continue to examine the impact World War II had on Des Plaines at its next Coffee Talk, “Des Plaines Service Members of World War II,” Thursday, March 12, from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the History Center, 781 Pearson Street.

Bill Kiddle from the Raupp Museum in Buffalo Grove will discuss how Maine Township changed during the war. He will also tell stories about some local people who worked overseas and on the home front.

“Des Plaines and Maine Township contributed greatly to the war effort,” said Philip Mohr, History Center curator. “Join us as we learn about how this changed our area.” A $3 donation is suggested.

After the Coffee Talk, guests are welcome to view the new exhibit, “World War II: Des Plaines and the War against Fascism,” which includes military uniforms worn by Des Plaines residents, artifacts donated from the war, and information about home life and industry during WWII.

In addition, homeschool families are invited to attend “Recycling: Then & Now” Wednesday, April 1, from 1-3 p.m. at the History Center. Students will learn about material drives in World War II and how they are similar to and different from recycling today. Everyone will make a craft out of recycled material that honors the memory of veterans. The Homeschool Adventures program is designed for children, ages 5-12, with an adult and lasts for two hours. The fee is $3 per child for non-members, $2 for members.
