DES PLAINES, IL — Cumberland Elementary School has earned a 2026 Governor's Blue Ribbon designation, with school leaders crediting the work of students, staff and the community for the statewide recognition.

The District 62 school was recognized as an Exemplary High Performing School, a distinction that reflects consistently strong academic outcomes over time, according to a district announcement Tuesday.

"This honor reflects the dedication, collaboration, and commitment to learning that make our school community so special," Principal Marc Infante said in the announcement.

Cumberland was among 24 schools honored statewide by Gov. JB Pritzker and the Illinois State Board of Education on Oct. 20. The program recognizes public and nonpublic schools for outstanding academic performance or success in closing achievement gaps.

Infante thanked staff for inspiring students and creating an environment where every child can thrive. He also credited students for their curiosity, hard work and perseverance, the District 62 school board for its leadership, and the community for its involvement.

"I am extremely proud of the Cumberland learning community for their dedication and commitment to academic excellence," Superintendent Michael Amadei said in the release.

"All our schools in District 62 are unique and diverse, which has always been a pillar of their strength. Congratulations to Cumberland for receiving this recognition. We celebrate you today and throughout this school year."

As Patch previously reported, this year’s honorees include 16 public schools and eight nonpublic schools. Sixteen schools earned high-performing recognition, while eight were honored for closing achievement gaps.

All 2026 recipients will be invited to a recognition event at the Governor’s Mansion in Springfield in the spring.

"This achievement belongs to all of us at Cumberland," Infante said. "We are grateful to the Cumberland learning community for their collective efforts and proud of what we can accomplish together."
