Des Plaines Park District space improved with assistance from grant!

Revitalization of the Des Plaines Park District Administrative & Leisure Center Outdoor Play Space Completed with $400,000 IDNR OSLAD Grant

The Des Plaines Park District is thrilled to announce the successful completion of the revitalization of the Administrative and Leisure Center playground, made possible by a $400,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources' Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) program. This project has transformed the existing play space into a vibrant Outdoor Nature Lab & Play Park, enhancing recreational opportunities for the Des Plaines community.

The newly developed playground features a nature-themed mural and play area to encourage exploration and learning. Central to this transformation is the Outdoor Nature Lab, which incorporates native plantings, educational signage, and interactive elements to foster environmental awareness among visitors. Additionally, a dedicated Sensory Zone has been established, offering sensory play options such as sand play, musical instruments, and sensory boards within a welcoming courtyard setting.

Further enhancing the park's offerings, visitors can now enjoy an amphitheater, a turtle pond, a tricycle track, a drop-shot area, and designated spaces for various games and activities. Recognizing the importance of inclusivity, we prioritized accessibility improvements throughout the project, ensuring that new benches, pathways, and shade structures make the park enjoyable for all community members.
Park Board President Eli Williams stated, “We are thrilled to provide these recreational opportunities for the community that include new playground, nature lab, and outdoor learning components, staff did a great job!”
