Jewelry Burglars Lured 79-Year-Old Out Of Home In 2023 Incident: Des Plaines PD

DES PLAINES, IL — It took nearly three years, but an arrest has been made in a residential burglary that occurred in May 2023. Joe Mitchell, 39, of the 3100 block of N. Oconto Avenue, Chicago, is accused of felony residential burglary following his arrest last week.
Police said Mitchell was at the Illinois Department of Corrections when detectives traveled there to meet him. He was arrested and taken to the Des Plaines police station on the new charge, approved by the Cook County State's Attorney's Office.
In May 2023, police responded to the 200 block of Shannon Court regarding a report of a residential burglary. The 79-year-old male victim said two unknown people had entered his home and stole various pieces of jewelry. He told police one of the two had knocked on his door before leading him to a fenced area in his yard, while the other entered the home and stole the items.

According to police, a neighbor reported that a black SUV was parked on the street in the area the afternoon of the incident, which was later identified as a black Chevrolet Equinox.
Police said a subsequent investigation by another jurisdiction led to the arrest of Mitchell. At the time of his arrest, Mitchell was in possession of four items of jewelry, all determined to be from the victim's resident. Des Plaines detectives continued the investigation into the incident and in March 2024, an arrest warrant was obtained.
