Maine Township Selects Electrical Aggregation Supplier for Unincorporated Area

Maine Township is always looking for ways to save residents money and provide better service. Here is one new way.

Maine Township Selects Supplier of Township
Electrical Aggregation for Unincorporated Areas

The Maine Township Board at its Jan. 27 meeting selected Constellation as the township wide supplier of electricity for residents living in the unincorporated areas. This was the second step in the process following voter approval last November in a referendum granting permission to seek an opt-out electricity aggregation program in Maine Township.

The contract with Constellation will be for two years with a 6.91 cent per kilowatt hour price in the first year and a 6.26 cent rate the second year. After two years, the Township will have the opportunity to seek new bids and/or renegotiate.

At the July 22, 2014 Maine Township Board meeting, an Ordinance was passed authorizing the placement of a referendum regarding an opt-out electricity aggregation program on the November 4, 2014 General Election Ballot. Voters in unincorporated Maine Township gave the Township the authority to seek competitive pricing bids for electricity services.

Since November, Maine Township went out to bid with the intent of entering into a single contract that would include residents and small businesses provided lower electric bills can be realized. Four companies supplied bids and Constellation was selected as the lowest bidder. Their contracted rates are lower than, for example, Com Ed.

In the coming weeks, Maine Township will send a notice to all residents and businesses in the unincorporated area regarding this change and provide a way to opt-out of the program. Residents and businesses can opt out but can also rejoin at a later date.
