Oakton presents “Perfect Arrangement” satire May 5-6

A staged reading inspired by the true story of the early stirrings of the American gay rights movement will be presented May 5-6 at Oakton.

“Perfect Arrangement,” a staged reading inspired by the true story of the early stirrings of the American gay rights movement, will be presented 8 p.m. Saturday, May 5, and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 6, at Oakton Community College’s Studio One Theater, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines.

Directed by Margaret Knapp, “Perfect Arrangement” is a satiric comedy that focuses on two U.S. State Department employees, Bob and Norma, who have been tasked with identifying sexual deviants within their ranks during the Red Scare. However, Bob and Norma are gay and have married each other’s partners as a carefully constructed cover. Madcap laughs give way to provocative drama as two “All-American” couples are forced to stare down the closet door.

“Our staged readings are programmed to showcase the words of a play more than see it fully performed,” Chair of Performing Art John Frisco says. “The purpose in this is to expose our audiences to either new works or plays that deal with social and political issues.”
