Oakton Visiting Artist Series features painter Stevie Hanley

Noted painter and lecturer at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago Stevie Hanley will discuss his artwork 1:30-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines, Room 1610. The Visiting Artist Series event is free and open to the public.

“After experiencing church-led ‘sexual reorientation’ therapy in his youth, Stevie’s practice is centered on carrying out the Mormon mission he was never allowed to begin,” Oakton Chair of Art and Design Lou Pierozzi says. “Harnessing the power of shame, his work delineates a space both sacred and profane.”

Hanley has exhibited extensively in Berlin, where he lived for six years. While in Berlin, he served as a curatorial assistant at the Schwules Museum and organized numerous independent curatorial projects. Hanley also has had his works displayed in Istanbul, Jerusalem, Mexico, Los Angeles, New York and numerous Chicago galleries. He is the founder and co-owner of the Condo Association, a Chicago museum that showcases the work of LGBTQ artists.

Hanley received his master’s degree in painting and drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from the University of California, Berkeley.

The Visiting Artist Series is hosted by Oakton’s art department and made possible by a generous grant from the Oakton Educational Foundation.

The next Visiting Artist Series event will feature Mexican artist Carmen Chami 9:30 a.m. Thursday, March 28, at Oakton’s Skokie campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave. Sculptor Vijay Paniker will visit the Des Plaines campus 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 3.
