Reclaim NW Suburbs’ Film, Discussion on Income Inequality
Join the discussion on the growing problem of income inequality with local community experts

Nine of the world's wealthiest people — according to Forbes' Billionaire List — have more wealth than half the world's population, according to a January report in the Independent. This is one of the many examples of the great income and wealth disparity we are witnessing today, a process that began thirty years ago with an economic and labor agenda favoring the 1% and leaving the rest of us behind.
Join Reclaim Northwest Suburbs to discuss the important issue of income inequality at the event, “Income Inequality: Documentary and Discourse” on Tuesday, July 31, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, 500 N. Dunton, in the Hendrickson Room. The Robert Reich documentary, Inequality for All, will be viewed and followed by a panel discussion consisting of local community leaders and experts on the topic of income inequality and the rise in suburban poverty.
The panelists, who are experts and leaders from the local community, will answer questions related to the problem of growing income inequality and its impact on local families. The panel includes Thakar S. Basati, Founder, Partners for Our Community; Jeannine Love, Roosevelt University Professor and expert in social policy; Jon Rapp, Social Worker at Journeys/The Road Home; Jim Slusher, Deputy Managing Editor for Opinion, The Daily Herald; and Ram Villivalam, Democratic Candidate for State Senate, 8th District.

Panelists at the event will address how this issue affects local families. Many families are struggling to provide basic needs for their family. Almost half of US families can’t afford basics like rent and food, according to a recent study by the United Way ALICE Project reported by CNN. Nearly 51 million households don’t earn enough to afford a monthly budget that includes housing, food, child care, and health care. That’s 43% of households in the U.S.
