Why Are Des Plaines Residents Worried About a New Plant That Could Create More Than 300 Jobs?

A German pharma company wants to build a $320M complex at Mount Prospect and Algonquin roads, but neighbors warn of a potential problem.

Des Plaines, IL—Normally, news of a company coming to town to create a new facility that would create more than 300 jobs would be welcomed by residents.

But some in Des Plaines are worried that a German pharmaceutical manufacturer's proposal to build a $320 million complex on a 17-acre site at Mount Prospect and Algonquin roads will cause headaches that added employment opportunities won't alleviate, the Daily Herald reports.

That headache? Traffic congestion for the people living near the proposed complex by Vetter, which provides items such as prefilled syringe systems to the the pharmaceutical industry.

The company's plan is to construct a production facility, an automated warehouse and an office-lab building on the property that use to house the Salvation Army, the report stated. Neighbors to the site believe these new additions will snarl traffic and create a hassle for them, according to the Herald.

But city officials have said they have road plans in place to eliminate any potential street backups caused by the new business, the report added.

If all goes according to schedule, Vetter will break ground on the plant in 2018, and the facility will be fully operational by 2022 or 2023, the Herald reports.
