Widow Files Lawsuit 5 Years After Swan Attack Killed Husband

The widow of a man killed by a swan at the Bay Colony condo complex in 2012 seeks more than $50,000.

DES PLAINES, IL - The widow of the Des Plaines man who died in an attack by a swan at a condominium complex five years ago has sued the complex, claiming negligence that led to his death. Amy Hensley named Hillcrest Property Management Inc. and Bay Colony Properties in a lawsuit filed in Cook County Circuit Court that seeks more than $50,000 in connection with the death of her late husband Anthony Hensley, according to a report from the Chicago Tribune.

Anthony Hensley died from a drowning at the Bay Colony condominium complex near Golf Road in unincorporated Maine Township on April 14, 2012. The father of two was in a kayak on a retention pond at the complex when the kayak was toppled by a swan who continued to lunge at Hensley as he attempted to swim to shore. Amy Hensley says the companies mentioned in the lawsuit should have known that swans are extremely territorial and that a dangerous attack like this could occur.
