President Will Tillman Inspires Unity and Student Success on Dolton’s First Day of School

Dolton School District 149 Launches "Back to School Huddle & Chalk Walk" to Inspire Students and Strengthen Family Engagement
Dolton, IL – August 5th 2025– Dolton School District 149 is kicking off the first day of the 2025-2026 school year with an exciting new tradition designed to empower students and bring families closer to their educational journey. The Back to School Huddle & Chalk Walk, part of the district's Families Matter series, will take place on August 13th at 8am at all District 149 schools.
This year, students of Dolton have much to smile about from celebrating the fact that the childhood home of the first American Pope is right here in Dolton, Illinois, to the optimism of new local leadership with a new Mayor, the community is brimming with positive energy and pride. This special event builds on that spirit, giving families and children an unforgettable start to the school year.
Parents and guardians are invited to walk their children to school and leave personal, inspirational messages in chalkat the school entrance, giving students a boost of encouragement as they step into a new academic year. The day begins with a special "Huddle" led by each school principal, delivering a powerful and motivational message to students, parents, and staff to set the tone for a year of excellence and unity.
"Families are the foundation of our children’s success. This event is more than just a first day of school it’s a community movement to remind every child that they are loved, supported, and capable of greatness," said Wilbur "Will" Tillman, President of the Dolton School District 149 Board of Education and founder of the Families Matter series. "We want to build bridges between home and school, making sure our children know they have an entire team cheering for them."
The Back to School Huddle & Chalk Walk follows the success of the district's Father’s Matter event held in June, which celebrated fathers and father figures. Every dad who attended left with tickets to a Chicago White Sox game, and six lucky fathers received round-trip plane tickets sponsored by High Society Management, highlighting the district's dedication to creating meaningful experiences that honor family connections.
"We know that when families are involved, children thrive," said Dr. Maureen White, Superintendent of Dolton School District 149. "This initiative is just one of many ways we’re fostering a supportive environment where students feel inspired to learn and succeed."
The Back to School Huddle & Chalk Walk is open to all District 149 families, with refreshments provided and opportunities to meet teachers and school leaders. The event underscores the district's ongoing commitment to making every child’s educational experience a shared and celebrated journey.
