DOWNERS GROVE, IL — An Oak Brook teen has been charged with reckless homicide in connection with the fatal crash that killed Katherine Jacobsen, 67, and Ried Jacobsen, 72, in Downers Grove.
Francesco Rendina, 17, of the 0-100 block of Royal Vale Drive, was granted pretrial release under the condition he does not drive a motor vehicle or possess or consume alcohol or drugs unless as prescribed.
Downers Grove police were called to the intersection of 35th Street and Highland Avenue just before 7 p.m. on March 27 for a report of a crash. According to prosecutors, Rendina was heading south on Highland "changing lanes in a reckless manner" and hitting speeds of up to 104 mph, a news release said.
He is accused of driving at 89 mph in a 45 mph zone when he hit the Jacobsens' car.
Ried Jacobsen was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash and Katherine Jacobsen was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
"Mr. Rendina’s alleged reckless driving on a busy road that resulted in a horrific crash and the loss of two lives demonstrates his complete disregard for public safety,” DuPage County State's Attorney Bob Berlin said in a statement.
Berlin added, “To the family and friends of Ried and Katherine Jacobsen, I offer my sincerest condolences on their tragic loss. The sudden, heartbreaking loss of a loved one is devastating, and I wish them strength as they continue their lives with just their memories of Ried and Katherine to see them through."
Downers Grove Police Chief Michael DeVries said, " “This tragedy has had a profound impact on everyone involved and serves as a painful reminder of the consequences of reckless driving and excessive speed. Our thoughts are with the victims’ loved ones as they continue to cope with this tremendous loss."
Rendina is set to appear in court on June 15.
