Students from Midwestern University's College of Pharmacy, Downers Grove, attended the Downers Grove Village Council meeting on October 20, where Mayor Robert T. Barnett proclaimed October 2026 as American Pharmacists Month.
The annual recognition has become a tradition for members of the University's chapter of the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP), who participate in the proclamation ceremony to raise awareness of the important role pharmacists play in healthcare.
Nicole Shin, a second-year College of Pharmacy student and president of APhA-ASP, addressed the Village Council on behalf of the pharmacy students.
"This proclamation is more than just a recognition for our profession; it is an opportunity to bring awareness to the important contributions pharmacists and pharmacy professionals make every day," Nicole said. "It serves as a reminder that pharmacists are among the most accessible healthcare professionals, always available to answer questions, provide guidance, and help patients make informed decisions about their health."
The 2026 American Pharmacists Month theme, Caring for Our Communities, highlights the expanding role of pharmacists in providing immunizations, managing chronic conditions, educating patients, and improving health outcomes.
The proclamation also recognized Midwestern University's College of Pharmacy for preparing future pharmacists to provide patient-centered care. Through their continued participation in this annual event, student pharmacists demonstrate their commitment to professional advocacy and serving their communities.
