DOWNERS GROVE, IL — On Thursday, village commissioner Chris Gilmartin took to social media to announce his bid for mayor of Downers Grove.
Gilmartin, who was elected to the Downers Grove Village Council in 2021, shared the news of his run for mayor in a video accompanied by a text statement.
He wrote, in part, "For the past five years I've served on the Village Council, where I've learned that good local government is mostly careful, steady work. It's digging into what is before us, challenging the status quo, listening before I vote, and following through."
Gilmartin mentioned highlights of his time as commissioner, including the village's AAA bond rating, lack of property tax increases and recent developments, such as the Downers Grove Civic Center, Lurie Children's Hospital and Rivian Motors.
Gilmartin wrote, "As Mayor, I want to keep this momentum going, continuing to protect our finances, invest in streets, water and stormwater systems, help local businesses grow, and support the police officers, firefighters and social services staff who keep us safe."
The mayoral election will take place on April 6, 2027. Downers Grove Mayor Bob Barnett cannot seek another term, as he has reached the village's term limits.
