1 Year, 2 Weapons Cases: Elgin Man Charged

An Elgin man has been linked to two different cases happening about a year apart and involving a handgun, police said.

ELGIN, IL —Tyran Campbell, 21, of the 400 block of Fremont St., Elgin, has been charged in two separate weapon cases that occurred nearly a year apart from one another, police said. In the first case, on December 11, 2018, at approximately 1:34 p.m., Elgin police responded to the 400 block of Park St. for a a report of a person with a gun.

While not charged at that time, Campbell was identified as a person who fled from officers that were investigating this incident, according to a post on the Elgin Police Department Facebook page. A subsequent search of the area resulted in the recovery of a handgun.

Further forensic analysis received by the department recently, has linked Campbell to the recovered handgun, according to information posted on the Elgin Police Department's Facebook page.

In the second case, on Dec. 5 at 10:48 a.m., Elgin police responded to the area of Fremont St. and N. Gifford St. for a citizen's report of two subjects involved in a verbal altercation with occupants of a passing vehicle during which one of the subjects pointed a gun at a the vehicle. Officers located the subjects matching the description provided, one of whom was later identified as Campbell, according to the Facebook post.

As officers arrived on scene, Campbell fled on foot and was observed throwing an object underneath a vehicle which was recovered and found to be a handgun, police said. Campbell was apprehended and taken into custody without further incident.

When police searched Campbell, marijuana was found on him, according to the Facebook post.

Both cases were reviewed by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office who charged Campbell with five counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, a class 4 felony, and possession of marijuana, more than 30 grams but not exceeding 100 grams, a class A misdemeanor.

Mr. Campbell appeared in Kane County bond court on Dec. 7, 2019 where his bail was set at $40,000 with $4,000 (10%) to apply for bond.
