1. Nominations open for 2026 Elgin Image Awards (dailyherald.com) — Nominations are now open for the 2026 Elgin Image Awards, honoring residents, groups and projects that boost Elgin's reputation, from professional standouts to youth service efforts. You can submit nominations online through Sept. 21, with winners celebrated Oct. 20 at The Centre of Elgin's Heritage Ballroom.
2. Boys soccer season preview: Scouting the Fox Valley (dailyherald.com) — Elgin, Larkin, South Elgin and other nearby high school boys' soccer teams are gearing up for the 2026 season, with coaches outlining key returners, newcomers and big challenges ahead. From Elgin's young Maroons eyeing top-ranked opponents to South Elgin reloading after a historic run, the preview helps local fans know who and what to watch this fall.
3. South Elgin board votes no on data center after hearing concept plan (chicagotribune.com) — South Elgin's village board has unanimously rejected annexation and zoning requests for a proposed 200,000-square-foot data center on Kenyon Road, after strong neighborhood opposition. Residents packed the meeting with petitions and signs, while company representatives argued the project would bring millions in tax revenue and minimal water, power, and noise impacts.
4. Employee 'accidentally' activates tornado sirens in Chicago suburbs overnight, county says (nbcchicago.com) — Overnight tornado sirens in DuPage County were mistakenly activated during a test, echoing confusion Elgin residents felt this spring when sirens sounded without a tornado warning. Elgin officials reiterate that local sirens are triggered only by National Weather Service severe warnings and are meant to alert people outdoors to seek shelter, not to wake those already indoors.
