Firefighters Rescue Man From Fox River In Elgin

ELGIN, IL — Firefighters rescued a man from the Fox River Saturday afternoon after he entered the water near downtown Elgin, officials said.

Elgin firefighters were called to the river south of the Chicago Street bridge around 3:25 p.m. Sept. 19 for a report of a man who had jumped into the water. The first crew arrived in less than three minutes and found the man wading south through the river.

Firefighters made contact with him and tried to talk him back to shore, according to a news release.

About six minutes after crews arrived, the man went underwater and was no longer able to keep himself afloat, according to the Elgin Fire Department.

Firefighters immediately entered the river and reached the man within about a minute. Additional crews in a boat pulled him from the water and brought him to shore.

The man was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin for evaluation. He reported no major injuries, officials said.

No firefighters were injured during the rescue.

The Elgin Fire Department was assisted by personnel and equipment from the South Elgin and Countryside fire protection districts.
