Author Chaya Bhuvaneswar to visit ECC reading event

ECC will welcome Chaya Bhuvvaneswar as the next featured guest of the fall 2019 Writers Center Reading Series on Thursday, Oct. 24.

Elgin Community College will welcome Chaya Bhuvvaneswar as the next featured guest of the fall 2019 Writers Center Reading Series on Thursday, Oct. 24. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. in the ECC Arts Center, Building H, Room H142, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

Bhuvaneswar’s debut short story collection, White Dancing Elephants (Dzanc Books, 2018) was selected at the winner of Dzanc Book’s 2017 Short Story Collection Prize and was named a Best Book by Elle, Huffington Post, New York Post, The Rumpus, NPR, San Francisco Chronicle, and more.

Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in Narrative Magazine, Tin House, Electric Literature, The Millions, Joyland, Large Hearted Boy, Chattahoochee Review, Michigan Quarterly Review, The Awl, jellyfish review, aaduna and elsewhere. Her poetry appears in Cutthroat, sidereal, Natural Bridge, apt magazine, Hobart, Ithaca Lit, and Quiddity. She was recently selected for inclusion in Best Small Fictions.

Bhuvaneswar is a practicing physician, writer, and 2019 PEN American award finalist. Her poetry and prose juxtapose Hindu epics, other myths and histories, and the survival of sexual harassment and racialized sexual violence by diverse women of color.

All Writers Center readings are free and open to the public. A pre-reading dinner with Bhuvaneswar will be held at 5:30 p.m. Books will be available for sale and signing. For dinner reservations or more information, please contact Rachael Stewart at rstewart@elgin.edu.
