KANE COUNTY, IL — Due to high river levels from recent heavy rains, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources has closed down the Fox River from the Stratton Lock and Dam in McHenry south to Millington, Illinois. The northern portion of the Fox River up through the Chain o’ Lakes has a "no wake" restriction in place, DNR officials announced. The state's closure pertains to boating and other water-related recreational activities on the Fox River.

Fast-moving currents, debris, and submerged structures and piers is creating dangerous conditions for boaters on the river, officials say. The high river levels also present potential problems for emergency personnel "called upon to rescue people involved in boating mishaps," according to a news release from the city of Geneva.

Meanwhile, a flood warning is in effect for the Fox River from Johnsburg downstream to Millington, according to the National Weather Service.
