Drug Dealer Faces Armed Violence Charge: Prosecutors

KANE COUNTY, IL – A Carpentersville man faces charges after officers pulled him over for a traffic offense and found 79 grams of marijuana in his car, police said. They also allegedly found a gun in the man's vehicle. Following the Feb. 25 traffic stop, Daniel Saavedra, 27, of the 2000 block of Berkshire Circle in Carpentersville, has been charged with armed violence, unlawful possession with intent to deliver and unlawful possession of cannabis.

Authorities said Saavedra had plans to deliver the marijuana to another person and also had a digital scale and Ziploc baggies on him, according to a news release from the Kane County State's Attorney's Office.

The armed violence charge, under Illinois law, can be filed against a person allegedly armed with a gun at the time he or she commits a felony.

Bail was set at $50,000 during a hearing Sunday in Kane County bond court, according to the news release.

Saavedra is next expected in court on Thursday.

If convicted on the most serious charge, Saavedra faces a sentence of at least 15 years in prison.
