Elgin Academy Senior Named National Merit Finalist

Senior Amelia Deering of Elgin Academy named National Merit Finalist

Elgin Academy Senior Amelia Deering has been selected to move from National Merit Semifinalist recognition to the status of National Merit Finalist. She joins the ranks of about 15,000 National Merit Scholarship finalists nationwide. Amelia is the daughter of Patrick and Bonita Deering of Batavia.

“Amelia is without question a truly exceptional student who celebrates the joy of intellectual curiosity for its own sake. She has achieved remarkable academic success at the same time that she has pursued excellence and leadership opportunities in a wide range of co-curricular and service ventures.” said Doug Sept, Director of the Upper School.

Amelia has received numerous academic awards, including the following: American Association of Teachers of German/ Study Trip Award (Amelia spent a month in Germany for earning this honor), National German Exam Gold Award, Dartmouth College Book Award, and Elgin Academy’s Excellence in US History Award. Amelia was inducted into the National Honor Society in 10th grade, she has been recognized by the Elgin Noon Rotary Club for straight A’s every year since 9th grade, and was inducted into the Cum Laude Society last year.

Amelia plans to double major in history and German at a college still to be determined.

Elgin Academy is a Preschool through Grade 12 independent school located in downtown Elgin, Illinois.

The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test--a test that serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.6 million entrants each year—and by meeting published program entry and participation requirements.
