At the start of the pandemic, the unemployment rate increased exponentially across the United States. But the national job market is showing signs of recovering, thanks to the rollout of vaccinations and other mandates.
According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the national unemployment rate today is 4.8%, which is down from the peak of 14.8% during the pandemic. Job markets in some cities have recovered better than others. To visualize this, CoStar News considered the 150 U.S. cities with the largest populations and compiled the top five cities for overall unemployment rate, change in employment from August 2021 to August 2019, change in employment from August 2021 to January 2020 and change in employment from August 2021 to August 2020. These are based on the most recent data available.
