Employees Credited With Preventing Gift Card Scam

Two employees at Sam's Club in Elgin helped a South Elgin woman from being scammed, authorities said.

ELGIN, IL — Two employees at the Sam's Club in Elgin are credited with preventing an elderly South Elgin woman from becoming the victim of a scam, authorities told the Elgin Courier-News. The woman was on her computer on Nov. 9 when a pop-up notification with a message allegedly from Microsoft stated her computer had been affected by a virus.

A short while later, a person called and asked for access to her computer. The caller also wanted the woman to go to a Sam's Club on Randall Road in Elgin and buy a $3,500 gift card. Two employees, Cathy Roth and Julian Flores, recognized the incident was a scam, talked to the woman and later called police, according to the article.

The employees were recognized for their efforts in preventing the scam at a Fox Valley merchants meeting last week.
