Facebook Posts About Throwing Dog Land Elgin Man in Jail

James Spencer has been charged with animal cruelty.

ELGIN, IL - A series of Facebook posts where an Elgin man talks about throwing his pitbull puppy across a room and then later complains about a $1,200 vet bill to fix the dog's broken leg has landed the 26-year-old in jail on felony animal cruelty charges, the Daily Herald reports.

James Spencer, of the 200 block of Center Street, was arrested in February and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals and a charge of violation of an animal owner's duties.

Elgin Police Department were alerted to Spencer's Facebook posts by PETA, or the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals, after PETA received an anonymous tip about Spencer, according to the Daily Herald.

Spencer is accused of severely fracturing the leg of his pit bull terrier puppy, King, in early February. Police reviewed surveillance video at Spencer's apartment complex to determine a timeline of when the dog was injured, according to the Daily Herald.

Spencer is free on bond. He is next expected back in court on April 12, according to online court records.
