First responders honored for saving life of man in cardiac arrest

ELGIN, Ill. — The first responders who helped save a man’s life after he went into cardiac arrest were honored Monday by Advocate Sherman Hospital and the Rutland-Dundee Fire Protection District Trustees.

In June, someone called 911 to report a fall, but dispatchers were able to determine the call was much more serious and a man was in cardiac arrest. Thanks to their efforts, Sleepy Hollow Police Department Officer Kyle Davis arrived less than four minutes later and started CPR.

With personnel from the Rutland-Dundee Fire Protection District and the West Dundee Fire Department, the first responders got a Return of Spontaneous Circulation and transported the patient to Advocate Sherman Hospital.

The patient has since been discharged from the hospital and is doing well.

“We are thankful for the actions of the first responders and their quick response to help give the patient the best possible outcome,” said Darren Smith, director of nursing, critical care, emergency services and nursing operations at Advocate Sherman Hospital. “Recognizing the first responders shows the commitment of the fire chief and trustees to excellence, teamwork and execution at all levels of EMS, including dispatch, police and fire.”

Teammates from Advocate Sherman Hospital were joined by Rutland-Dundee Fire Protection District Trustees in recognizing the work of the first responders involved.
