Fuel Spill After Elgin Crash Could Take Days To Clean Up

The collision occurred near East Chicago Street and Shales Parkway on Thursday morning.

ELGIN, IL – A large fuel spill could cause some lane closures in Elgin in the coming days. The spill occurred when a truck with an empty tractor-trailer lost control while turning from East Chicago Street onto southbound Shales Parkway at about 8:05 a.m. Thursday, according to a post from the Elgin Police Department's Facebook page. The truck struck other vehicles and hit an electrical tower on Shales Parkway before coming to a stop in a field.

Police said minor injuries were reported following the collision but did not specify how many were hurt.

ComEd and Exelon were called to the scene to evaluate the integrity of the tower that was hit. The Environmental Protection Agency was consulted due to a fuel spill, which came from the truck.

"Due to the amount of fuel, a hazardous materials removal company was contacted and they will be cleaning up the spill over the next couple of days," according to the Facebook post.

Because of the extended period of time that this incident will take to be cleared, the traffic pattern may be impacted with periodic lane closures, police said.
