Girl Biking Down Hill Hit By Car After Bike Brakes Fail: Police
The 10-year-old South Elgin girl was taken to the hospital with a concussion and a broken leg following the accident Wednesday afternoon.
SOUTH ELGIN, IL — A 10-year-old South Elgin girl was hit by a car after it appears the brakes on the girl's bike failed Wednesday afternoon, authorities told the Daily Herald. The girl was not wearing a helmet when she headed east down a hill on State Street and crossed the southbound lane of Route 31 when she was hit by a northbound car, South Elgin Deputy Chief Mike Doty told the Daily Herald.
The girl suffered a concussion and a broken leg, her mother, Veronica Fernandez, told the newspaper. Fernandez, a Daily Herald employee, said her daughter was taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates for treatment. She was out biking with a group of other children when the incident occurred.
"We'd like to remind parents to make sure they check the safety equipment on their children's bikes and make sure they are wearing bicycle helmets," Doty told the Daily Herald. "And remind them that they have to follow the rules of the road, just like drivers do.
