Humanities Center Speaker Series Returns with ECC Alum Sandro Miller

After a two-year hiatus, the Elgin Community College Humanities Center Speaker Series is back with two events focused on the art world. Both events occur in the Spartan Auditorium, Building G, 1700 Spartan Drive in Elgin, and are free and open to the public.

The series starts with “A Photographer’s Life,” featuring ECC alum and world-renowned photographer Sandro Miller on Tuesday, November 1, at 11 a.m.

Miller is a still photographic and video artist with a career in fine art and commercial photography spanning over three decades. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, reviewed and discussed in many popular art publications, and compiled in fourteen books. He has also produced iconic images of many celebrities and public figures. “If my art life was liquid,” Sandro explains, “I search for creative vessels to pour myself into.” Miller regularly shares his travels and work on his website, sandrofilm.com.

“The Humanities Center Speaker Series hosts thought-provoking events featuring engaging speakers from a diverse array of backgrounds,” said Geoff Pynn, ECC associate professor of humanities. “We are thrilled to welcome Sandro Miller, one of our most influential alums, to share his unique and inspiring journey from ECC to the heights of artistic success.”

The next Humanities Center Speaker Series event features the team behind WBEZ’s “Sound Opinions,” an independent radio talk show and podcast based in Chicago. Cohosts Greg Kot and Jim DeRogatis, along with contributing producer and senior news editor of RollingStone.com Althea Legaspi, will lead a discussion titled “Woody Allen. Daniel Tosh. R. Kelly. Bill Cosby. Does Separating Art from the Artist Perpetuate Violence Against Women?” Join the conversation on Thursday, November 17, at 11 a.m., followed by a reception and book signing at 12:15 p.m.

Established in 2006, the ECC Humanities Center Speaker Series navigates today’s intellectual landscape by bringing renowned speakers of international, national, and regional importance to the college to speak on topics significant to the humanities for the benefit of the ECC academic community.
