ELGIN, IL — An Elgin man has been convicted of fatally shooting 20-year-old Devonte Turner as he sat in a car in an apartment complex parking lot in April 2015. During a jury trial this past week, prosecutors said William M. Ingram, 32, mistook Turner for someone else when he snuck up behind the car parked in the 1200 block of Fleetwood Drive in Elgin on April 30, 2015, and fired seven shots through the back window.

On Wednesday, a Kane County jury found Ingram guilty of first-degree murder. In addition, the jury ruled Ingram personally discharged the gun used to kill Turner, of the 1 to 99 block of Poplar Creek Drive, which means Ingram faces a mandatory 25-year sentencing enhancement when he is sentenced in November. Kane County Associate Judge Charles E. Petersen can impose a sentence of 45 to 85 years in prison during the Nov. 15 hearing, according to a news release from the Kane County State's Attorney's Office.

Prosecutors said two bullets hit Turner, who was sitting in the front passenger seat of a car parked at the apartment complex lot on Elgin's west side during the April 2015 shooting. Turner's friend, who was in the driver's seat, immediately drove off and called for help and Turner was taken to a hospital where he later died, according to the news release.

Ingram remains in custody at the Kane County jail, where he has been on a $4 million bail since his arrest. His bail was revoked after he was convicted on the murder charge.

“Mr. Ingram violently and intentionally ended a young man’s life, and now he must pay a steep price, possibly facing imprisonment for the rest of his life," Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said. "I hope this verdict provides a measure of comfort for Devonte Turner’s loved ones."
