Man Sentenced To 7 Years For Beating Girlfriend

An Elgin man will serve time in prison for battering his girlfriend in the Carpentersville apartment they shared, and then repeatedly shoving the police officer who responded to their home, prosecutors said Tuesday. Markey L. Price, 41, pleaded guilty Friday to charges of aggravated battery to a peace officer, a Class 2 felony, and domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor, and was sentenced to seven years in prison, according to a news release from the Kane County State's Attorney's Office.

Prosecutors said Price began to kick and punch his girlfriend during an argument during the early morning hours of Jan. 21 in an apartment they shared in the 1 to 99 block of Oxford Road in Carpentersville, according to prosecutors. A neighbor heard the commotion and called police.

When Carpentersville police responded. Price answered the door and appeared intoxicated, according to authorities. When an officer tried to remove Price from the apartment, Price pushed the officer in the chest and attempted to shut the door in his face.

The officer told Price not to push him and continued to direct Price to the hallway. Price pushed the officer a second time, and police arrested him. Police found the girlfriend in the apartment. She had bruises on her face, arms and legs, a cut on her right eyebrow, a swollen right eye socket, a swollen upper lip, blood on her lower lip, and blood on her shirt.

Price, of the 1100 block of Abbott Drive in Elgin, was eligible for enhanced sentencing on the aggravated battery charge because he previously has been convicted of at least two Class 2 felonies, prosecutors said. According to Illinois law, Price is eligible for day-for-day sentencing. He received credit for 180 days served in the Kane County jail.
