Mold Causes South Elgin School Classrooms' Closure

Four classrooms in an Elgin school are closed much of this week due to the discovery of mold.

ELGIN, IL — Kenyon Woods Middle School in South Elgin has four classrooms closed through Wednesday after mold was discovered in them, according to multiple reports. Kenyon Woods isn't the only school in the area undergoing mold remediation.

The school day continued Friday throughout the remainder of the building, officials said, according to a Chicago Tribune report.

"We have now completely remediated those classrooms and we are still waiting for the air samples to come back, so we can reopen them," Superintendent Tony Sanders said, according to WBBM.

The Tribune reported a teacher found mold and reported it to school principal Lisa Olsem. Plant operations workers confirmed it was mold Thursday.

Ten classrooms in the school were inspected and four were found to have mold.

“Again, we do think the risk is low, but we wanted to address it,” district spokeswoman Mary Fergus said.

Coleman Elementary in Elgin was also closed for five school days for mold remediation as well as air quality testing, according to the Tribune.
