A woman was fatally shot and three others were wounded in the gunfire early Sunday.

ELGIN, IL — A homicide investigation is underway in Elgin after a Chicago woman was fatally shot over the weekend outside D Hangout Bar and Grill, according to the Elgin Courier-News. On Monday, Elgin police identified the woman as Shaprie Smith, 25, of the 6000 block of Fairfield Avenue in Chicago. Smith and two other women were shot in the parking lot of the bar in the 500 block of South McLean Boulevard at about 12:23 a.m. Sunday.

The women were taken to area hospitals and Smith was pronounced dead just before 5 a.m. Sunday, authorities said. A fourth shooting victim, a male, took himself to the hospital.

"Although the investigation is continuing at this time, we can confirm that the incident started as a verbal altercation outside of the bar with several subjects, including those who suffered gunshot wounds," police said. "We do believe this is an isolated occurrence."

Armando Latigo told the Elgin Courier-News he and his wife were hanging out at D Hangout Bar and Grill when the shooting occurred. They were sitting at the bar, listening as a band played and unaware of the violence happening outside. When they left the establishment at about 1:30 a.m., patrons were being asked to leave through the bar's back door, Latigo told the newspaper.

The shooting remains under investigation. Elgin police are encouraging anyone who may have been in the parking lot of the bar at the time of the shooting to call.
