Public Invited To Elgin Police Chief's Retirement Ceremony

Jeff Swoboda took the helms as Elgin's top cop on April 16, 2010 and has been with the city for 26 years.

ELGIN, IL – After 26 years with the city of Elgin, Chief Jeff Swoboda is retiring from his post. Swoboda will be heading to Fort Collins, Colorado where he will serve as their chief of police. The public is invited to Swoboda's retirement ceremony, which will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on May 31 at the Heritage Ballroom at The Centre of Elgin, according to a post on the Elgin Police Department's Facebook page.

"With such a long career here in our city, we know many in the community wish to say goodbye and extend well-wishes," according to the Facebook post.

At the retirement ceremony, Swoboda will be honored for his policing and leadership contributions and for positive impact on Elgin's neighborhoods and the city.

Swoboda will start his new job on June 4. Swoboda, who earns $178,246 per year, took the helms as Elgin's top cop on April 16, 2010.

"I am very excited and humbled to be chosen as the Fort Collins Police Chief," Swoboda said in a news release. "I am looking forward to working with the community and the highly committed staff to reach the clearly stated goal of making Fort Collins the safest city in the country."

Fort Collins announced Swoboda as their pick for their next police chief last week.

"I am thrilled to offer this position to Chief Swoboda, as it is clear he is the top candidate for Fort Collins." said City Manager Darin Atteberry. "In approximately 20 meetings with his Elgin Police Department colleagues, representatives from city hall, the mayor, city manager, the media, community organizations and neighborhood groups, I learned about his commitment to service, his passion for excellence and his ability to hold all to a high level of accountability."

Swoboda will earn $192,000 as the police chief in Fort Collins, Colorado.
