Residents Displaced Following Elgin House Fire

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

ELGIN, IL – The cause of a fire Monday evening at an Elgin home is currently under investigation. The Elgin Fire Department responded to the residence in the 1100 block of Highbury Drive at 5:28 p.m. for a report of a blaze near the chimney and smoke and flames coming from the home. The initial fire crews found smoke and heavy flames coming from the roof and attic of the one-story home, according to a news release from the Elgin Fire Department.

Firefighters acted quickly in less-than-ideal conditions to quickly put the fire out in 15 minutes, preventing it from spreading beyond the attic and roof area, fire officials said. The recent snowfall and low temperatures created challenges for responding firefighters working on the scene as the water from the fire hoses quickly froze, causing slippery conditions.

Damage to the attic and roof areas of the home left the residence uninhabitable, according to the news release. As a result of the fire damage to the attic and roof areas, the residents have been displaced.
