Shot Fired During Elgin Pistol-Whipping Attack: Police

A St. Charles man now faces felony charges after he entered an Elgin apartment and attacked a man and woman early Saturday, police said.

ELGIN, IL – A 41-year-old St. Charles man is accused of pistol-whipping a man and woman inside an Elgin apartment early Saturday. The .40 caliber handgun Joshua B. Bibbins used in the attack ended up firing a shot but did not hit anyone, the Daily Herald reports. Bibbins first entered the apartment in the 1200 block of Fleetwood Drive in Elgin at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, authorities said.

He first went into the woman's bedroom and began to beat her, according to the Daily Herald. The man who rented the apartment confronted Bibbins who then struck him with the gun, which caused a shot to be fired, according to the article.

Authorities said Bibbins struck one of the victims in the head with the gun. He hit the other victim in the face. Both suffered "great bodily harm," according to a news release from the Kane County State's Attorney's Office.

Bibbins, of the 1400 block of Indiana Avenue in St. Charles, fled but was arrested a short time later and authorities also allegedly recovered a gun with a spent shell casing nearby, the Daily Herald reports.

The man and woman injured in the attack were treated at a hospital, according to the Daily Herald.

Bibbins, who has past felony convictions for delivery of cocaine and possession of a controlled substance, is currently being held at the Kane County Jail on a $250,000 bail. He is charged with armed habitual criminal violence, armed violence with a weapon, armed violence-discharged a firearm while committing a felony, and two counts of aggravated battery-great bodily harm, according to online court records.

He is next expected in court on Nov. 16.
