Suburban Woman Missing In Nepal After Devastating Floods: Reports

BARTLETT, IL — A Bartlett woman is among the thousands missing in the wake of disastrous flash flooding last week along the Nepal-China border, according to reports.

Poonam Dilipkumar Thakkar, 42, was in Nepal to make a religious pilgrimage to Mt. Kailash, the Chicago Sun-Times reported, adding she checked in with family from her hotel Wednesday in Timure, but the structure is no longer standing and her entire travel group is missing.

“Once we found out about the flooding, we’re calling, we’re texting, and we’re not hearing anything back. We still haven’t heard anything back,” her niece, Esha Sachdev, told WGN.

Thakkar’s sister, Bhumika Sachdev, planned to fly on Sunday to Nepal to search for Thakkar, who is a citizen of both the U.S. and Canada, according to the Sun-Times.

As of Monday, 80 Americans remained missing, according to the U.S. State Department.

Nepal’s disaster agency said that 1,003 deaths had been counted there, with 3,916 people missing, including 583 foreign nationals, as of Tuesday. In its latest update, China reported 16 deaths and 546 missing, including 261 foreigners.
