Traffic Alert: I‑90 Ramp to IL 31 Closed for Toll Plaza Improvements
Westbound I‑90 drivers to follow a detour via Randall Road while toll plaza upgrades continue; tolls waived for affected traffic.
ELGIN, IL — Drivers traveling on Interstate 90 near Illinois Route 31 should expect a detour starting Sunday, March 22 at midnight, according to the Illinois Tollwa.
The westbound I‑90 ramp to southbound IL 31 will close while crews continue toll plaza improvements, including pavement, lighting and signage upgrades.
The detour will route I -90 traffic to the Randall Road Interchange and then back onto eastbound I-90 to access Illinois Route 31. Tolls will be waived at the Elgin Toll Plaza for traffic following the detour, according to the news release.

Toll plaza improvement work at the Illinois Route 31 Interchange began in 2025 and is scheduled to continue through summer.
Electronic message boards and signs will alert drivers in advance, and all work is weather dependent.
