U-46 Hosts Dual Language Information Meetings

The informational sessions will educate parents on the 2018-19 Dual Language 80:20 Program

ELGIN, IL – School District U-46 is inviting all families of incoming kindergarten students or English-dominant first graders to Dual Language informational meetings hosted at local schools during the next two months, according to school officials. Starting in April, the district will also host informational sessions for families of students who are currently in sixth grade dual language programs.

Dual Language is a form of bilingual education in which students are taught literacy and grade-level academic content in two languages, according to a U-46 news release. The informational sessions will cover details of the U-46 program itself, the application process and research showing the benefits of bilingualism.

U-46 uses an “80:20” program in which the youngest students start out with 80 percent of their instruction in Spanish and 20 percent in English, reducing the Spanish-language portion by 10 percent per year from kindergarten through third grade, until the split is 50-50, where it remains through sixth grade.
