150 New Virus Cases In Elmhurst Since Late June

Last week's increase in coronavirus cases was 12 percent, authorities say.

ELMHURST, IL — Since late June, Elmhurst has seen more than 150 new cases of the coronavirus, according to the DuPage County Health Department. As of Sunday, Elmhurst had 451 virus cases, up from 402 a week before and 295 on June 28.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst had seen 37 coronavirus-related deaths so far, according to the health department. That was the same number as the previous week.

Nursing homes are often hotbeds for the coronavirus. In Elmhurst, The Grove of Elmhurst reported 85 cases as of Friday, up from 76 a week earlier. It was followed by 42 at Artis Senior Living, 17 at Lexington of Elmhurst and 2 at Park Place of Elmhurst. The coronavirus deaths are 19 at Artis, 11 at Lexington, 6 at The Grove and none at Park Place.

The case numbers at nursing homes include employees, who may live elsewhere and thus excluded in Elmhurst's overall number.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst had 9.6 coronavirus cases per thousand people. That compares to 7.2 in Darien, 7.6 in Western Springs, 7.9 in La Grange Park, 8.5 in Clarendon Hills, 11 in DuPage County, 11.7 in Burr Ridge, 13.3 in Hinsdale, 16.5 in La Grange and 15.8 in suburban Cook County.

Meanwhile, Elmhurst Hospital's coronavirus caseload increased by three in the last week, to 21. In the early weeks of the pandemic, the number hovered around 60.

In the last week, the hospital reported five more deaths as a result of the coronavirus. That brings the total to 75.

Since March 24, 436 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital following treatment for confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the hospital. Elmhurst's patient base covers an area far greater than Elmhurst itself.
