VILLA PARK, IL – A couple of years ago, Elmhurst residents who look to downsize sometimes move to Villa Park, where housing is considered more affordable.

Even Elmhurst's mayor has acknowledged that reality.

Next year, Villa Park is expected to get more housing – 238 apartments to be exact.

Last week, developer Marquette Companies broke ground on a seven-story apartment building, with 7,500 square feet of ground-floor commercial space, according to a news release from the Naperville-based company.

The building will be in a vacant lot at 100 S. Villa Ave., in the town's Old Town neighborhood. It will be three blocks from Elmhurst's city limit.

Called The Union Villa Park, the building will consist of "luxury" apartments, the developer said.

The project will include 94 indoor parking spaces for public use that will serve the new Villa Park Recreation Center, which is next door, the developer said.

The developer said the new recreation center has increased the neighborhood's attractiveness.

"The need for quality housing in this part of Villa Park continues to rise, as evidenced by the high occupancy level at the neighboring Ovaltine Court apartment community, and the increasing interest of current residents to remain in the area while enjoying a city-center lifestyle," Trevor Ryan, Marquette's president, said in the news release.

The building's architecture will reflect a more industrial character with a brick exterior, metal accents and inset balconies, according to the news release.
